Matching Aloha Wear for Family Photos
Planning matching Hawaiian outfits for your whole family sounds fun — until you actually try to do it. Suddenly you’re toggling between six browser tabs, realizing the print you love only comes in men’s and toddler sizes, and your teenager is giving you that look.
I moved to Oahu with four boys (ages 8, 10, 11, and 13 at the time — chaos personified) and figured out the hard way which shops actually make it easy. Here’s your shortcut – from a mom.
And hey — if you’re doing Hawaii family photos while you’re here, matching aloha wear photographs beautifully. Whether you hire me or someone else, get the outfits handled first. You’ll thank yourself later.
The photos in this article are from an extended family photo session I photographed near Disney’s Aulani Resort and the Four Seasons in Ko’Olina on Oahu.

What Is Aloha Wear — And Why It Actually Photographs So Well
According to the Hawaii Guide, the aloha shirt originated in the 1930s in Waikiki. It took off with tourists, surfers, WWII servicemen, and the rest is island history.
For photos, aloha prints work because they add visual interest without anyone looking try-hard. The bold patterns draw the eye, coordinate without being matchy-matchy, and — big bonus — they hide the fact that your kid spilled shave ice on himself five minutes before the session. Speaking from personal experience.
What You Wear to Your Hawaii Family Photoshoot Actually Matters

I tried to pretend this wasn’t true for years. It matters.
Choosing your matching Hawaiian family outfits involves three things:
- Your photographer’s editing style — light and airy vs. bright and vibrant vs. moody will change which colors pop
- Your location — sandy beach and turquoise water calls for different colors than volcanic rock or lush greenery
- Your family — these photos are yours. Wear what makes you feel good and look like yourselves

What Aloha Wear Colors Look Good in Camera for Hawaiian Family Outfits
Blues, greens, and earth tones work beautifully against most Oahu backdrops. Bright white can blow out in direct sun. All-black tends to absorb heat (miserable) and can read flat on camera.
For matching Hawaiian outfits for family groups, I love:
- Navy or cobalt as the anchor color, mixing prints and solids
- Sage or tropical green — feels lush against the island backdrop
- Dusty pink or rust for a warmer, sunset-friendly palette
- Cream or tan as neutrals to balance a bold print
Matching Hawaiian Family Outfits: How to Coordinate Without Looking Like a Cult
You have options. Nobody has to dress identically (although that’s cute too). Here’s how to approach matching Hawaiian family outfits:
- Everyone wears the same exact aloha print — classic, zero guesswork
- Pick one base color, mix the prints — a little variety without chaos
- Add neutral pieces (white dress, khaki shorts) to complement the aloha anchor
- Extended family? Have each nuclear family unit wear their own color — easy to tell families apart in group shots
Matching Aloha Wear Ideas
Aloha wear can be done a couple different ways. Everyone in the group can wear the same print, the same color, or you can mix it up adding neutrals. Or in a large party, every nuclear family can wear a different color.
- Everyone wear the same exact aloha print
- Pick one color and mix up the prints
- Add in neutral colors like a white dress, khaki pants, or solid colors to complement the aloha wear
- In an extended family, every nuclear family wear their own color
- Coordinate solids with the print
- Use the same print and colors in different cuts

Where to Find Matching Hawaiian Outfits for the Whole Family
The challenge with most online shops: they separate apparel by category (men’s, women’s, girls, boys). You spend an hour cross-referencing prints to see if they’re even available in every size. Total time-suck.
These shops actually organize matching Hawaiian family outfits by print or collection — making it a whole lot faster:
Pineapples Boutique — My Personal Favorite for Matching Aloha Wear
My absolute favorite is Pineapples Boutique in Ko’Olina, right across from the Four Seasons and Disney’s Aulani. It’s a true small business with local roots — prints designed in Hawaii, owned locally. Not China.
They have everything from kids to adults, shirts and dresses in the same prints, and SO many cuts. I have a dress and pant set from them that I wear constantly — the fabric is lightweight and moves beautifully in the breeze (which means great photo movement).

Yireh — Hawaii-Inspired Matching Aloha Wear with a Boutique Feel
Yireh is a newer find and honestly such a good one. Their Ohana matching styles collection is designed with families in mind — flowy fabrics, tropical prints, and a more elevated boutique aesthetic than you’ll find at the big-name chains.
If you want matching Hawaiian family outfits that feel a little less touristy and a little more curated, Yireh is worth a look. The prints are gorgeous and the women’s styles in particular are flattering and photo-ready.
Fighting Eel — Women-Owned, Oahu-Based, Actually Easy to Shop
Fighting Eel launched in 2003 and has four stores on Oahu — Kailua, Kahala, Kapolei, and downtown Honolulu. They organize their matching Hawaiian shirts for family by print, so you click the one you like and all sizes and styles populate. Men, women, keiki, baby — all in one place.
- Free shipping on orders $250 or more
- Simply select your print and all options will populate — no tab-hopping required
Reyn Spooner — The Classic Pick for Matching Hawaiian Shirts for Family
Reyn Spooner also started in the 1930s. They have a unique collaboration with Disney’s Aulani Resort that you can only get in-store — worth noting if you’re staying there. They’ve also partnered with MLB, NBA, and collegiate teams if your crew wants to blend aloha with a little team pride.
Kahala — The Original Hawaii-Made Aloha Shirt
Kahala is the original aloha shirt, dating back to 1936 — and it’s the only one still made in Hawaii. Their signature print was designed for Duke Kahanamoku, the famous surfer and Olympic athlete from the 1920s. If you want traditional, quality, made-in-Hawaii aloha wear, this is it.
Hilo Hattie — 60 Years Strong, Easy Family Matching Section
Hilo Hattie has been crafting Hawaii products for 60 years. Their aloha wear is cut, sewn, and stitched locally. They have a dedicated family matching section that makes shopping for matching Hawaiian outfits for the whole family genuinely easy. Multiple store locations across Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island. B
