What is newborn lifestyle photography in Oahu?
Lifestyle Newborn Photography is where the photographer comes to you and photographs not just baby, but the whole family and even the dog. It’s an elevated version of your every day self. Your home, your details, baby and her details, siblings and nursery.
We photograph:
- Whole family first
- Baby & siblings (so big bro & sis are doooone)
- Mom, Dad & baby
- Mom & baby
- Dad & Baby
- Nursery details
- Baby swaddled
- Baby Details
- Action shots of swaddle, rocking, etc
- Normal every day things you already do
Hey! I’m Alison, lifestyle photographer, recovering homeschool mama of 4 boys circus and USMC family.
I’ve been photographing families for 12 years. One thing I’ve learned: photos never lose their value.
But the thought of dealing with 3 hour studio photoshoot is just too much.
Not only do you have to worry about getting everyone dressed and to the studio on time, but spaces can be cramped and uncomfortable – and take forever!
In home newborn photos are half the time and capture the intimate details that studios simply can’t.
How Newborn Photos Work
- We book your due date. I only take 2 families per week to leave plenty of wiggle room. Baby’s gonna do what baby’s gonna do! We get wardrobe set before delivery.
2. After baby arrives and everyone is home, we set the actual photo session day. Newborn sessions are weekday mornings usually around 10am and last up 90 minutes and are easy and painless.
3. Two to three weeks after photo day we gather again virtually for your Gallery Reveal & Order appointment! Buy only what you love. Digital files come with the print products.
How lifestyle photography works
Timing
Newborn lifestyle photos are best done within the first 10 days of birth. That isn’t always possible and that’s ok. Extended stays in the hospital do not mean you can’t have lifestyle newborn photos!
I like to reserve the estimated due date on my calendar, but the actual session will happen sometime after delivery, when ever that happens. Baby’s gonna do, what baby’s gonna do!
Safety
With lifestyle photography, there’s no concern about safety because we aren’t putting baby in different poses that could hurt her neck. You’re in your own home with your furniture and things. Totally safe!
Comfort
Photographing newborns in home is the most comfortable way to do it – by FAR. Who wants to spend 3 hours in a studio?? Not me and I’m the photographer.
You won’t have to leave the house, pack bags or anything else.
Candid Photos
Yes we’ll get candid photos too! If we there’s a sibling, we’ll do all the sibling photos first – with baby, the whole family, etc and then they’re done! Snacks on the couch. Here’s my best tips for prepping a toddler for newborn photos.
I’ll set you up, tell you to do normal things like rock, sit, stand, gaze, or kiss your baby. We’ll photograph just baby, the nursery, mom and baby, dad and baby, whole family – dogs welcome!
We’ll get the unexpected photos too – little antics, laughs, and more!
Natural Light
Lifestyle photos still can depend on natural light, but I will also have back up lighting to make it LOOK like natural light too. Its a magical trick! So don’t worry about a dark room, corner, or whatever else you might be pre-judging. That’s the photographer’s job!
Preparation
We’ll work together to prep wardrobe well before delivery – for the whole family! Here’s my guide for what to wear.
As far as the house goes, just simplify 2 rooms if you have them: the nursery and a living space. Sometimes its the master bedroom, sometimes is a den or living room, or both. No need to rearrange furniture – just simplify surfaces. And by that I mean toss everything in a box and leave it in the kitchen.

Oahu Lifestyle Photographer Options
The vast majority of lifestyle photos with newborns happens in the client’s home. And it doesn’t need to be a Southern Living feature home either!
But there are some other options for lifestyle newborn photos.
You could do them outside at a park or botanical garden. This is less personal and a bit more posed but its still photos of baby!
You could rent a home studio for your session. Home studios charge on an hourly bases but can add up quickly if they have a minimum rental fee of three hours or more.
