So you’re staying in Laie — or thinking about it — and you want stunning family photos on this trip. Good news: I come to you. No hauling the kids into a rental car at sunrise, no wrestling a GPS through country roads you’ve never driven. I’m Alison, a Laie photographer who shoots on location all over the island — including right where you’re staying.
But real talk? Laie is not your typical Hawaii postcard. And I think you deserve to know exactly what you’re getting before you fall in love with the idea of swaying palms and turquoise water. (Spoiler: it’s gorgeous, just different.)
Let me give you the honest, mom-to-mom breakdown of Laie photographer breakdown — the wind, the vibes, the beach situation, and yes, what to wear.

Wait — Laie Doesn’t Look Like the Rest of Hawaii?
Nope! And that’s actually one of the things I love about it. Laie sits on the windward side of Oahu — lush, green, and a total world away from the resort-heavy south shore. Think rolling hills, dense tropical foliage, and the kind of laid-back country energy that makes you want to slow down and breathe.
But here’s the thing that surprises almost everyone booking a Laie photographer for the first time:
- Pine trees, not palm trees. Seriously! The area is full of ironwood pines (locals just call them pine trees), which line the beaches and create this wild, windswept, moody backdrop. It’s actually stunning in photos — just not what most people picture when they think Hawaii.
- It’s very, very windy. Windward side living means the trade winds hit hard up here. Beautiful for the dramatic, flowing-hair shots. Less beautiful for the kid who refuses a ponytail. Plan accordingly, mama.
- Public beach access is limited. Unlike the more tourist-developed parts of the island, Laie doesn’t have tons of easy pull-up-and-go beach spots. I know where to go — that’s the perk of hiring someone local.
This is exactly why having a Laie photographer who knows the area is worth every penny.

The Real Deal About Staying in Laie
Laie is a small, tight-knit community best known for two things: the Polynesian Cultural Center and the Hawaii campus of Brigham Young University Hawaii (BYU-H). The town has a distinctly different energy from the rest of Oahu — it’s quieter, more residential, and genuinely community-oriented.
If you’re staying up here, you probably already know that. And you’re either in a vacation rental or staying near the PCC. Either way, here’s what to know:
- There are very few full-service grocery stores — stock up in Kaneohe or Kailua on your way in
- The Polynesian Cultural Center is absolutely worth a full day — especially with kids
- The drive from Honolulu (about an hour) is one of the most beautiful on the island — take the windward H3 or the coastal Kamehameha Highway
- Dining is limited — Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck isn’t far away on the North Shore, and it’s a must
Basically: Laie is a vibe. A very specific, very authentic Hawaii vibe. And it photographs beautifully.

Why Hiring a Laie Photographer With a Travel Fee Is Still 100% Worth It
Here’s the honest part: there is a $75 travel fee for family photo sessions in Laie. I’m based in town, and Laie is about an hour away. That fee covers my drive — one way out, then back home after your session.
But here’s my question back to you: would you rather pay $75, or spend your vacation morning doing THIS:
- Wake up everyone at 4:30am
- Make four kids get dressed in the dark without fighting
- Navigate Oahu roads you’ve never driven before
- Find parking at a beach you’ve never been to
- Arrive frazzled and totally not in the mood to smile
Yeah. I come to you. You walk out your front door. I’m already there. We do the photos. You walk back inside. Done. That’s the whole point of a photographer who comes to your location — and honestly, it’s one of the things my clients say they love most.
Your family’s energy at a session is directly tied to how stressed everyone is before it starts. Me coming to you = calmer kids, happier parents, better photos. Trust me on this one.

What to Wear for a Laie Family Photo Session (Wind Edition)
Okay, real talk about the wind — because if I don’t mention it and you show up in loose linen pants and a flowing maxi dress thinking you’re going to look breezy-chic, you might actually just look breezy. Like, very breezy.
Here’s what I recommend when you’re working with a Laie photographer:
- Flowy dresses: Actually great here — the movement in photos is stunning. Just go a little longer if you don’t want a Marilyn Monroe moment.
- Loose hair: Embrace it or plan for it. A low bun or braid keeps everyone sane and still looks beautiful.
- Layers for kids: It can feel cooler than expected with the wind. A light jacket in the bag is a mom win.
- Avoid logos and busy patterns: Stick to solids and soft tones — creams, dusty blues, sage, terracotta. They photograph beautifully against the green landscape and pine trees.
- Skip the white: Wind + white on kids + Hawaii morning = a stress level I don’t wish on anyone.

The Best Spots for Family Photos in Laie
I know what you’re thinking: if public beach access is limited, where do we actually shoot? My two favorite options are right outside your accommodations — yes, your actual front door, yard, or rental property — or Laie Beach Park, a local gem that most tourists completely overlook. Either way, I scout ahead, know exactly where the light hits, and handle all the logistics so you don’t have to think about a thing.
There are a few quiet beach pockets near Laie that offer incredible backdrops — pine tree silhouettes against the ocean, dramatic rocky shoreline, lush greenery. It doesn’t look like Waikiki. It looks like the real Hawaii. And honestly? That’s way cooler.
Pro tip: sunrise sessions here are especially magical. The light coming over the Ko’olau mountains hits the water in a way that makes everything glow. And yes, I am absolutely a sunrise photographer — which means your session is done before 8am and the rest of your day is entirely yours.
