I’m Alison, the “Wild Card”

On the phone with a business coach, he validated all my frustrations saying, “The good news is you’re doing everything right. The bad news is you’re already doing everything. You’re a bit of a wild card.”

I’ve relaunched my photography business 7 times over 5 states and 2 overseas. From being all-inclusive photographer charging just $150 to running a six-figure business where clients happily invest thousands per session, I’ve experience the full spectrum of this industry.

Each move is a masterclass in adapting. Use my experience to stop guesswork and start growing.

Why You Need a Photography Blog

Blogging for SEO isn’t just a buzzword—it’s how you get found online by the right clients. Here’s why it’s worth your time to start a photography blog”

  • Evergreen Content: Blog posts work for you long after they’re published. Unlike Instagram reels or TikToks, which fizzle out after 48 hours, a well-optimized post can bring in clients for years.
  • Attract Your Ideal Client: Starting a photography blog allows you to answer the exact questions your dream clients are Googling—like “what to wear for family photos” or “how to prepare for a newborn session.”
  • Boost Your SEO: A blog for photographers is one of the fastest ways to climb the search rankings, especially if you’re smart about your keywords and topics.

How to Start a Photography Blog (Even If You Hate Writing)

Starting a photography blog doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Here’s how to make it easy and fun:

Step 1 Blogging for photographers: Stop Overthinking Topics

You don’t need to keep writing the same “Family Photos at [Insert Location]” post. Instead, think about what your clients really want to know. Here are some ideas:

  • What to Wear for a Beach Session (Without Looking Like a Windswept Kite)
  • How to Get Toddlers to Smile (Instead of Run Away) During a Family Shoot
  • Tips for Vacation Photos That Don’t Scream “Tourist”
  • How to Prepare for Sunrise Sessions (Yes, They’re Worth the Early Alarm!)

Find keywords that go along with that topic to sprinkle in the text. Not sure about keywords? I have a whole episode and write up here.

Step 2 Blogging for Photographers: Break It Down Into Small Chunks

Each blog post can be split into bite-sized chunks, then write. What to wear for extended families feels really overwelming to write. If you break it down into genders, age groups, or generations, its suddenly much easier to tackle. What’s that saying? How do eat an elephant? One bite at a time.

For example, “What to Wear for a Beach Session” could include:

  • Best fabrics for windy weather
  • Hairstyles that won’t become a hot mess
  • Why baby doll dresses are a photographer’s nightmare

Suddenly, that overwhelming blog idea becomes 3-4 easy-to-write paragraphs. Boom. 💥

  • No more than 3 sentences per paragraph.
  • Write like you speak
  • Use bullets. (see what I did there)

Step 3 Blogging for Photographers: Optimize Content for SEO

Blogging for SEO is crucial. Use relevant keywords naturally throughout your post to help your photography blog rank higher on search engines. Keywords like “beginning photography blog” or “blogging for photographers” can be integrated seamlessly to attract your target audience.

Use an SEO tool like Yoast to help you.

BONUS! Step 4 Blogging for Photographers: Track Your Keywords for SEO

You don’t want to cannibalize your efforts when you start a photography blog – that means you don’t want to compete against yourself. Use just one keyword per blog post or webpage to maximize results. To do that you need to be organized. Use this keyword & blog post tracker for FREE to help you get started.
