- Dense tropical greenery and grassy areas that feel genuinely wild rather than resort-manicured

Ko Olina sits on Oahu’s west (leeward) side, about 25 miles from Honolulu in the town of Kapolei — about a 40-minute drive from Waikiki depending on traffic. The secret beach itself sits just beyond the northern end of the Ko Olina lagoon walkway.
Walking From Ko Olina Resorts
- From your room at Aulani: approximately 15 minutes on foot along the coastal walkway heading north
- From Lagoon 1 (the northernmost lagoon): short walk — the path turns rocky just before you arrive
- Follow the coastal path past the lagoons until the pavement ends. That’s your cue.
Driving and Parking
Parking at the Ko Olina secret beach is the part that catches most visitors off guard. Here’s the honest breakdown:
- Limited free public parking near the Four Seasons side of Ko Olina — spots fill fast
- It is genuinely common to arrive and find a line of cars waiting — especially on weekends
- Nearby event parking is private and unavailable during the day — the shopping center across Ko Olina Blvd is your best backup (~.50/hour)
- Best backup: the shopping center across the street (~$2.50/hour, under 10-minute walk)
- Weekday mornings are dramatically easier for parking — another reason my sessions run Monday through Friday at sunrise
What to Wear on the Walk In
- Sandals are fine — bare feet are not. The path is rocky and uneven.
- Not suitable for strollers or guests who are unsteady on their feet
- Wear shoes you can walk on rocks in to get there — sandals work, bare feet don’t. Once we’re on the sand for your session, shoes come off.
What to Expect at the Ko Olina Secret Beach: The Real Talk
This is the part I always cover with clients before we finalize a Ko Olina session, because going in with realistic expectations makes for a much better morning.
The Turtles Are Real — and Protected
Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) visit this beach regularly to feed on algae along the rocks, and turtle sightings during sessions happen more often than not. When it does — it’s magic. The kind of moment you can’t plan or replicate.
That said:
- It is illegal to touch, chase, or get within 10 feet of a sea turtle — in or out of the water
- Hawaiian monk seals also visit and require 50 feet of clearance — a seal on the sand can take up a significant portion of this small beach
- I will always defer to wildlife. If the beach is occupied, we move to our backup location.
The Crowds — An Honest Assessment
The Ko Olina secret beach is no longer much of a secret. As a Ko Olina photographer who shoots here regularly, I’ve personally shown up to find as many as seven photographers working simultaneously in this small space. That’s a lot of competing setups for a beach this size.
This is exactly why I shoot weekday mornings only, at sunrise. Weekends bring permitting challenges and crowds that show up even at first light — it’s not worth it for my clients or for me. On a quiet Tuesday at 6am, this beach feels like it belongs to your family. That’s the session I’m building.
The Water
Don’t let the small waves fool you — the swells and currents at the secret beach are powerful. This is open ocean, not a protected lagoon, and it is not a swimming beach. It photographs beautifully. Stay out of it. Always check Hawaii Ocean Safety before any beach visit.
