Show Your Face: Video Marketing Tips for Photographers Who Want to Stand Out

video marketing tips for photographers. An article by Alison Bell

Looking for video marketing tips to transform your photography business? On episode 55 of the Keep It Moving podcast, I dive into one of the most underutilized yet powerful tools in your photography business arsenal—showing your face through video to connect with potential clients. These video marketing tips are game-changers for photographers struggling to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Why Video Marketing Tips Matter for Photographers

“This kinda touches on my big pet peeve when it comes to how we onboard new leads or respond to new leads is you wanna be memorable,” I shared early in the episode. With potential clients often reaching out to multiple photographers at once, blending into the crowd is the fastest way to lose a booking.

As a photographer who’s relocated my business multiple times as a military spouse, I’ve learned that implementing effective video marketing tips creates an immediate personal bond that’s nearly impossible to achieve through text alone. When clients can see your face, hear your enthusiasm, and get a taste of your personality, they remember you when making their decision.

Think about your own experience as a client—wouldn’t you feel more connected to someone who took the time to send you a personalized video rather than a template email? This is why video marketing tips are so essential for today’s photographers.

Three Powerful Video Marketing Tips for Your Photography Business

1. Stand Out From the Crowd

The first of my essential video marketing tips: when potential clients inquire with multiple photographers simultaneously (which they almost always do), your face and personality become your most valuable differentiator. I’ve been on both sides of this equation—sending inquiries to multiple photographers for my own family photos and receiving inquiries as a photographer.

The sad truth is that without video, websites and offerings start to blur together for potential clients. By showing your face, you create a memorable impression that helps clients recall exactly who you are and what makes your work special.

2. Create a Personal Connection That Text Can’t Match

Among the most valuable video marketing tips I can share is this: your enthusiasm, warmth, and genuine excitement come through in video in ways that text simply cannot convey. When clients can see your expressions and hear your tone of voice, they connect with you on a much deeper level—even in just a minute or two.

I’ve received countless comments from clients mentioning how much they loved my inquiry videos, often highlighting specific details they connected with: “I love that you have four boys too!” These personal connections form the foundation of client trust.

3. Become Your Own Advocate with Decision-Makers

“When you send a video to your client, they no longer become a third party mediator to other decision makers in the group,” I explained in the podcast. This is perhaps the most powerful of all my video marketing tips.

Think about it—when a mom inquires with you about family photos, she typically needs to “sell” your services to her husband or other family members. With video, you become your own salesperson. Mom can simply share your video, allowing you to explain your process, your value, and your pricing directly to everyone involved in the decision.

This is especially critical for extended family sessions or newborn photography where multiple people are usually involved in the booking decision.

I’m Alison, the “Wild Card”

On the phone with a business coach, he validated all my frustrations saying, “The good news is you’re doing everything right. The bad news is you’re already doing everything. You’re a bit of a wild card.”

I’ve relaunched my photography business 7 times over 5 states and 2 overseas. From being all-inclusive photographer charging just $150 to running a six-figure business where clients happily invest thousands per session, I’ve experience the full spectrum of this industry.

Each move is a masterclass in adapting. Use my experience to stop guesswork and start growing.

Where to Apply These Video Marketing Tips in Your Photography Business

Inquiry Response Videos

Both Melissa and I use video as our first point of contact with potential clients. My approach is quick and focused—a one-minute video introducing myself, highlighting what makes my photography different, and explaining next steps.

I keep it tightly focused on three key elements:

  • Who I am (mom of four boys, fast and fun photographer)
  • What makes me different (printed heirloom artwork, not just digital files)
  • Clear next steps (booking a discovery call)

Melissa takes a different approach with slightly longer videos (6-7 minutes) that walk clients through her entire process and pricing. Both approaches work well—the key is finding which of these video marketing tips feels authentic to you and what serves your specific client experience.

Pricing and Product Videos

After connecting with clients on a discovery call, I send a 5-minute product and pricing video that shows the physical products I offer. This allows clients to see me holding album samples, showing frame corners, and explaining the value of each collection.

Creating these videos in Canva or Loom gives you the ability to screen record while showing your pricing guide, making it easy for clients to understand exactly what they’re investing in. These videos also give clients the information they need to share with other decision-makers.

Product and Design Videos

For clients who have booked, consider creating videos that showcase your products in more detail. I have a short album video embedded in a blog post that I share with clients before their gallery reveal.

When clients have questions about album design or product options, a quick video explanation is worth a thousand words (or more). Using Loom to show design changes without actually making them saves time and helps clients visualize options before making final decisions.

Best Tools for Implementing These Video Marketing Tips

We discussed several tools in our “Tool Time” segment that make implementing these video marketing tips simple for photographers:

Loom: This is our top recommendation for getting started with video. The free version allows videos up to 5 minutes long, which is plenty for most client communications. Loom lets you record your screen, your face, or both simultaneously.

“You can do a free up to five minute recording without paying for anything. So it can be really budget friendly if you’re just trying to get started in video,” Melissa shares. For longer videos or advanced features like embedding clickable links, the paid version is around $10/month.

Canva: If you create your pricing guide in Canva, you can record yourself walking through it while showcasing your face in the corner. This is my preferred method for detailed pricing videos.

Phone Videos: Sometimes the simplest option is best! Recording quick videos on your phone for client communications works perfectly for many situations. Just be sure to delete them after sending to manage your storage.

Getting Started: Action Steps for Video Marketing Tips

If you’re feeling nervous about getting on camera (and most of us do at first!), here are some simple steps to get started with these video marketing tips:

  1. Start with a controlled environment: Record a generic pricing video where you know exactly what you’ll say before turning on the camera.
  2. Outline your key points: For inquiry videos, know what 3-4 points you want to hit and keep it concise.
  3. Don’t overthink your appearance: While looking professional is important, clients value authenticity over perfection. As Melissa pointed out, good lighting matters more than perfect makeup.
  4. Create reusable content: For FAQs or common questions, create generic videos you can send to multiple clients.
  5. Embrace “done” over “perfect”: You’ll likely re-record your videos multiple times as you get more comfortable, so don’t stress about making the first one perfect.

The beauty of these video marketing tips is that they allow your potential clients to connect with the real you. Don’t hide behind a wall of professionalism—let your personality shine through. If potential clients don’t appreciate seeing the authentic you, they’re probably not your ideal clients anyway.

Conclusion

These video marketing tips represent one of the most powerful ways to differentiate yourself in the crowded photography market. By showing your face, connecting personally with clients, and becoming your own advocate, you’ll convert more inquiries to bookings and create a more memorable client experience.

Remember, you don’t need fancy equipment or perfect hair to start implementing these video marketing tips—you just need to show up authentically. As we say on the podcast: don’t be afraid to connect with your people on a personal level and be yourself.

If you’re stuck trying to figure this out alone—we don’t do that around here. Book a quick discovery call and let’s talk through your next step. alisonbell.co
