Before all the immense amount of rain, it was super cloudy. But during this session we had real, unfiltered rays of sunlight! Overcast can be powerful, don’t get me wrong. There’s a lot of freedom in the soft light of cloud cover. But we’ve had so much of it lately, I’m over it!

These guys are already back stateside, a theme for the last month.  I love connected with my clients after their sessions and I’m sad I wont be seeing these guys around! Maybe at another duty station :D

We just got our own family photos back recently.  I can’t decide which frame to print for any of my four boys.  Each one shows a different part of his personality. My solution was to create a collage in Photoshop, even though it was sooo time consuming.

But then I found collage prints! Have you seen them?? They’re a bit hidden…

I know first hand awkward it can be in FRONT of the camera! Just about every year we have our own family photos done. The only exception was that one year with two PCS’s within 6 months of each other, so you can imagine why. ;)  When I give advice on keeping it stress-free, its from experience!

I contacted Kristi James Photography before she PCS’ed and said “I just want blue water!!!” I’m not a fan of the muddy looking water at sunset. We’re a family of all boys, lots of energy and the beach is just our jam.  I can sit on my tail while everyone can go different directions and everyone is happy. Arguing? I just send em walking in opposite ways. I brought my favorite beach chair (because I take it every. single. time.) and my bluetooth speaker.  I blasted Jimmy Buffet per our usual and had a great time!

  • New takeaway: play music for my clients!!

We shot at beach pull off in Kin Town. Its right across the street from the non-tactical gate at Hansen, if you’re familiar with it. I suggested it because I like the story behind us. We live across the bay in the background. We pass this beach every time we go see Daddy at work or check the mail.

Notice the real life, taking my own advice: FOOD! Yes, the box of raisins made it in the shot. :D I’ok with that. That’s the story of being 2 and 4 years old, amiright?

Here’s my favorite family shot :

Mom’s vision was just up my alley.  No posed shots, just a normal Saturday morning in their home.  She knew the light was best in the morning, even in a base house! And even better, They didn’t have a lick of government furniture in their living room.  I can’t even say that for myself! I think we can all agree it just doesn’t photograph well :D

Big bro took his reading seriously. And can you believe he required wearing that blazer?! Kid’s got style

Combined senior and family session is the way to go! If you don’t have an elaborate list of shots, locations or wardrobe changes, two sessions in one is very doable.  That’s exactly what we did here. We went to the Torii in Yomitan which had a nice variety to give our senior options, and a bathroom for a small wardrobe change. And of course, its very Okinawan.

Tips for senior sessions -

Bring a sibling or friend along. Anyone that can make your senior laugh. Being in front of the camera is awkward! A side kick helps cut the awkwardness.

Accessorize – As with any session, something to do with your hands or easily change out like a hat, large necklace, soccer ball, guitar or other momento of his or her interests.

Walk away. Having mom stare at him while he’s in front of the camera just amplifies the tension.

Have fun! Its only an hour or less, so relax, it’ll be over soon ;)
